Note-taking on the computer usually goes hearing → transcribing. The loop goes hearing → understanding → abstracting → encoding into writing/drawing. The people I notice in my classes taking paper notes are the people I see with the highest grades later on (note: I often don't really know people's names in person I know their work, but when I put the face to the name, I am never really surprised you can tell people who are paying attention).Įssentially, writing by hand requires you to parse and reformulate the information, because it's a slower medium, which means you've done some pre-processing of the information. Speaking as a professor, which means that I've spent much of my life as a student as well, note taking should be done on paper. So, I would say your argument is a little bit like “why would I buy an iPhone when there are so many public phones available for 50¢ a call?” You already know the benefits of having it, so you don’t question it. So for me, it’s about having one device to put things in, but multiple ways of saving things automatically and swiftly, that also let me annotate notes and PDF, but I can access it from any stationary computer if I were somehow without any of my own devices. I didn’t have a workflow for scanning (no scanner and scanning apps were really awful) and I got tired of carrying around a stack of printed PDFs in my bags, and having folders all over the place.
